Volkswagen vans overview

Volkswagen started making vans way back in the 1950s when the Dutch importer realised that a modified VW Beetle chassis would make an ideal way to move parts around his warehouse. The original Transporter van was born there and then, and it continued with rear-engined power — just like a Beetle — right up to the 1990 when the T4 version of the model finally moved the engine to the front.

The Transporter — and its classic round-shaped predecessors — have defined the VW vans brand as more than just commercial vehicles. They’re transport for surfers, they get converted into camper vans, there’s even a few high-performance versions.

The star power of the Transporter tends to overshadow VW’s other vans, such as the Caddy and the big Crafter, but they’re good vans and there are plenty of both available on the second hand market. More recently the addition of the all-electric ID. Buzz Cargo and the Multivan have brought a touch of retro-EV glamour and some car-like driving characteristics back to the VW vans lineup.

FAQs

Yes, Volkswagen makes several vans — the Caddy, the Transporter, the Multivan, the electric ID. Buzz, and the Crafter.

Yes, they really are. In fact, the Caddy, Transporter, and the Crafter are all in the top ten list of most reliable vans in the UK.

Yes, they are. The Transporter is the keystone of the range, with a payload of up to 1.2 tonnes and a car-like driving experience, but the Caddy, Crafter, and ID. Buzz are all very good too.

Volkswagen’s main van factory is in Hannover, in northern Germany, but it also has factories in Poland and Argentina.

It has to be the Transporter, really. While the new one shares its tech with the Ford Transit (something that has really upset traditional VW van fans) the previous, T6 Transporter is a truly excellent van, and not bad to drive, either.

Mileage isn’t really what you should be concentrating on, as these are solid and reliable machines. The things to check are the overall condition of the van, and its service history. If both are solid, forget about the mileage.
