Ford vans overview

When we talk about vans, Ford has THE van — the Transit is what everyone thinks of when they think of a van. It’s been around since the 1960s, and was not only the first van designed to car-like standards, but also the first van specifically designed to take a sheet of 8x8 plywood in the back. No wonder builders always loved it.

Since the Transit arrived, Ford has made lots and lots of other vans, from small ones based on various Fiesta models, to one based on the Focus estate, to more recent Courier and Connect models. They’re all hugely popular, so finding one second hand should never be too much trouble, although of course finding one that’s been properly cared for might be a bit trickier.

FAQs

Right now, Ford makes the big full-sized Transit (which also has an all-electric version), the Transit Custom (which is what most of us think of as the proper Transit), the smaller Transit Connect, and the compact Transit Courier.

Yes, the Transit Courier is quite small, being based on the same mechanical bits as a Ford Puma. The Transit Connect is also quite compact, about the same size as a VW Caddy or a Citroen Berlingo.

Generally speaking, yes - Ford vans are reliable, but if you’re buying one of the smaller models with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, beware of the dreaded ‘wet belt’ timing belt system.

Yes, they are, or the Transit wouldn’t have been the market leader for the past several decades. Overall build quality can be variable, but in general all Ford vans are spacious, built to work hard, and affordable.

It has to be the Transit Custom, which is the van we think of as being the ‘proper’ Transit. It can swallow a big load, but also drives like a car, thanks to sharper steering than is the norm for a working van.

There’s no set mileage that’s good — the trick is to suss out the condition of the van and its service history. If both of those look good, then the mileage doesn’t really matter.
