Mercedes vans overview

We don’t tend to think of Mercedes as a maker of vans — it makes luxurious cars, surely? The fact is that Mercedes has been making commercial vehicles almost since the company was founded, and not only does it make vans, it also makes massive HGVs too.

Mercedes is probably best-known for its square-nosed TN van models of the 1970s, which eventually evolved into today’s big Sprinter. Although vans aren’t supposed to be posh, there’s no question that a TN or a Sprinter cuts slightly more of a dash than a Transit or a Vivaro.

The Mercedes van lineup now consists of the Sprinter, the Viano (which is also sold, in passenger form, as the V-Class), and the small Citan (which is actually shared with Renault as the Kangoo). All of the current models come in either diesel or electric form.

Mercedes has big fleet deals with the likes of Amazon and DHL, so there are plenty of used Mercedes vans on the used market.

FAQs

Generally speaking, yes, and Mercedes has an excellent reliability reputation, but you need to keep an eye out for oil leaks, and the AdBlue systems can cause problems.

Yes, they are. The Vito and Sprinter are both big and able to carry heavy loads, and while the cabins aren’t luxurious, they’re often a little more comfortable than other vans.

Mercedes builds its vans all over the world, with factories in Germany, Poland, Spain, the USA, Argentina, China, and Algeria.

The Viano is probably the best Mercedes van to buy, as it gives you a lot of the capability of the bigger Sprinter, but it’s more affordable and easier to handle in tight spaces.

Yes, they’re not actually that much more expensive than most other van models, and Mercedes has an excellent reputation for reliability and solid quality.

There’s no specific mileage that’s good — check the condition of the van and the service history, and if those look good then you can basically ignore the mileage.
