Used BYD cars overview

BYD entered the UK market two years ago with the aim of becoming one of the country’s biggest-selling car brands, and it just may do so. Its Atto 3, Seal, and Dolphin models have proven popular thanks to their quirky styling, decent EV ranges, and tempting prices.

As used purchases all three make a compelling case, although the popularity of the Atto 3 with taxi operators takes the shine off just a bit. The Seal saloon is fairly sharp to drive, and the Dolphin hatchback is like a VW ID3, but better value.

All three cars, though, suffer from overly-complex infotainment systems which have caused a few complaints, while in some areas the cabins aren’t as robust as they should be. However, the batteries are proving to be robust so far, which is a big tick in the BYD box.

Popular used BYD models

Used BYD Atto 3

The Atto 3 is a compact electric SUV, sized roughly between a VW T-Roc and an ID4. It has a roomy cabin, but it’s a bit over-styled, with a massive gear selector designed to look like an airliner’s throttle and door bins that look like guitars (seriously). The battery is good, though, capable of providing a decent 250-mile real-world range, and the Atto 3 is blamelessly easygoing to drive, even if it’s not much actual fun. It does look very bland on the outside, though.

Used BYD Seal

The Seal is BYD’s rival to the Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar 3. It has sharp styling on the outside, and the cabin looks smart too, with a swoopy design and that slightly strange rotating touchscreen (which is way, way too fiddly to use). It feels mostly good to drive, but bumpy roads can unsettle it. Two-motor versions are seriously quick, but the single-motor rear-drive version is the better choice, and more than quick enough.

Used BYD Dolphin

Silly name, sensible car — the Dolphin is BYD’s answer to the Renault Megane or Cupra Born, and it combines a roomy cabin with decent one-charge range and a driving experience that, while it’s not sporty, is perfectly acceptable. The boot’s on the small side, but the quirky looking cabin is quite nice, aside from the too-fiddly rotating touchscreen.

FAQs

Yes, not least because BYD offers an impressive six-year warranty on its cars, so unless the one you’re looking at has done more than 93,000 miles, it’ll still be covered. BYD’s batteries should be more robust than most, too as they use the lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry which is reckoned to be more resistant to rapid charging than other car brands’.

Yes they are. They’re decent value for money, have good EV range and charging times, and the six-year warranty means that almost all BYD cars in the UK are still covered for peace of mind.
