About Morgan cars

The Morgan Motor Company is the oldest British car manufacturer still operating today. Founded in 1910, it began with three-wheeled cars for pleasure and racing, not building its first four-wheeled car until 1935.

Three-wheelers were phased out in 1952 and Morgan carried on building its sports cars, particularly the iconic Plus Four and larger Plus 8 series. Nowadays, Morgan sells a reborn variant of the three-wheeler named the Super 3, alongside its more traditional Plus Four and a larger, more powerful Plus Six.

Using modern engines sourced from BMW along with traditional building techniques - it still frames its bodywork using ash wood, for example. Every car is hand-built at Morgan鈥檚 factory in Malvern, and customer orders can take well over six months to complete - but the benefit with a handcrafted car is that they can be personalised almost infinitely.

Morgan cars aren鈥檛 practical daily drivers, nor are they hardcore track machines - they鈥檙e toys, but lovely ones. Morgans are ideal for sunday drives and road trips, and require a somewhat sensitive owner to drive around their lack of modern safety aids - as well as put up with a degree of tempermentality.

What our car expert says

“There鈥檚 nothing like a Morgan - these cars are like stepping back in time, but that doesn鈥檛 mean they鈥檙e not brilliantly evocative to drive and satisfying to own.”

Morgan FAQs

Morgan is owned by a private equity firm but the Morgan family retain a minority shareholding and remain heavily involved as public ambassadors. Morgan is not owned by another car company.
All Morgans are built at the firm鈥檚 factory on Pickersleigh Road in Malvern, Worcestershire. They have been built in Malvern since 1909.
Morgan vehicles are handmade and somewhat unconventional, so you shouldn鈥檛 expect them to be quite as dependable as a regular family hatchback. However, they do use fairly straightforward engineering, so repairs shouldn鈥檛 be too difficult.

Alternatives to Morgan cars

Nobody really builds cars like Morgan - if you want something handcrafted and bespoke, you sort of need to go direct to the manufacturer. If you want a more conventional sort of sports car, you could try Alpine, Aston Martin or Porsche, and BMW supplies engines to Morgan so could also be worth a look.
