About Geely

Geely - specifically the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group - is a Chinese multinational company headquartered in Hangzhou, China. Unlike many Chinese car manufacturers, it’s not state-owned, and is privately held by a Chinese entrepreneur.

Geely was founded in 1986 as a manufacturer of refrigerator parts, then moved on to selling motorbikes in 1994 and cars in 1997. Now in 2025, it’s one of China’s largest car companies, and it’s also the parent company of many brands familiar to UK buyers - Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Smart and even LEVC, the company that makes London taxis - are all Geely brands.

Geely entered the UK market on its own terms in 2025, with an all-electric SUV called the EX5. It promises good levels of standard equipment and impressive tech for a low price point - much like many other Chinese car brands do.

Geely Holding Group owns Volvo as well as many other vehicle manufacturers, but while Geely and Volvo will inevitably share some technology, the two companies have very different goals, designs and target markets - so they aren’t ‘the same’.
