About INEOS

INEOS is a massive chemical company owned by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, who loved the old Land Rover Defender. When that Defender went out of production, Ratcliffe spent some of his billions turning INEOS into a car maker, and the rugged, tough Grenadier is the result.Ìý

The Grenadier is an old-school off-roader, not really an SUV. Like the original Land Rover Defender, it’s almost closer to being agricultural machinery. The Grenadier is big, tall, and has seats for up to seven. Or you can get the Grenadier Quartermaster, which is a four-door crew-cab pickup version. Both cars use BMW-sourced straight-six engines with either diesel or petrol power, driving all four wheels (of course) through an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.Ìý

INEOS might need to branch out from the ultra-rugged Grenadier if it wants to prosper, but the company knows that and has already developed a second model — the Fusilier — which is smaller than the Grenadier and comes with either electric or plug-in hybrid power, although that model is on the back-burner for the moment.Ìý

INEOS’ commitment to create a car that’s close to the spirit of the original Defender is admirable, especially when the new Defender is much more refined and luxurious, but while the Grenadier’s off-road ability is hugely impressive, it’s too compromised as an on-road car.Ìý
