BYD Auto is a Chinese automotive giant, building everything from electric bicycles to large trucks and buses. It also has a hugely successful global electric battery making division.
BYD might not be a household name in the UK yet, but it’s the second largest electric vehicle maker in the world behind Tesla with five million BYD EVs sold to date.
Key highlights
BYD Auto is actually a subsidiary of BYD Co Ltd, a vast Chinese conglomerate founded in 1995. It found huge success building mobile phone batteries, capturing half of the world’s market by the early 2000s.
BYD Auto was founded in 2003, manufacturing cars, vans, buses, trucks, forklifts and even bicycles. It also produced EV batteries in vast numbers. In 2008 it built the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid car.
As sales continued to grow, BYD rapidly expanded across the globe, and in 2020, European countries took deliveries of EVs including buses. However it wasn’t until 2023 when BYD Auto’s range of electric cars and vans arrived on UK shores.
BYD and EVs
The latest BYD Auto models are very competitive on price, quality and performance when compared to European equivalents, and have distinctive features not found on alternatives. On the car side there’s the ‘Ocean’ models - the Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal - while on the van side we have the ETP3.
Top models
The BYD ETP3 is an affordable electric van for the masses. Targeted at companies running electric fleets, but also suitable for smaller businesses, the ETP3 is top value, promising a range of up to 170 miles on a charge, a 3.5m3 capacity and a payload of up to 780kg.
Similar brands
BYD competes with a number of new Chinese entrants into the market, such as Maxus and DFSK. However, it’s also up against European brands such as Citroen, Renault and Vauxhall.

BYD Models
The BYD ETP3 is a small, value-focused panel van designed to be powered by batteries from the get-go. Roughly the same length as a Citroen e-Berlingo, but narrower and taller, it’s designed to excel in urban environments with its agile size and nippy performance.
