Dacia found global appeal in the 21st century, but it was founded in Romania way back in 1966 with an objective to produce modern and reliable cars that were affordable for the Romanian population.
It's first models were effectively updated versions of old produced under licence, but because they were the first cars ever produced in communist Romania, demand was high and Dacia soon made cars sold across the Eastern Bloc. This relationship with Renault continued until 1999 when Dacia became the official third brand of the Renault Group.
Under Renault ownership Dacia flourished, developing a range of models such as the Logan saloon, Sandero small car and the Duster 4x4. Sales exploded across not just central and eastern Europe but now western Europe, which had cottoned on to the brand’s low-cost appeal.
Dacia finally sold cars in the UK in 2013, with the Sandero becoming Britain’s cheapest new car. Well over 200,000 Dacias have since been sold in the UK, and over eight million have been delivered to customers worldwide.
