KGM Motors is the new name for SsangYong, a long-established brand based in South Korea. It made its name in the UK in the 1990s producing tough and reliable workhorse 4x4s.
In the 2010s KGM Motors expanded its range offering with more sophisticated and stylish models such as the affordable Tivoli and spacious Korando, but its focus has recently switched to developing affordable and rugged EVs.
Key highlights
KGM Motors (formerly SsangYong) is a Korean brand that has been producing vehicles since the 1950s. Building everything from fire trucks and buses to jeeps for the US Army, it built a reputation for reliability and strong engineering.
It wasn’t until the 1980s that it turned its attention to passenger cars, and in the nineties its first global hit was the Musso, which used engines and technology from Mercedes-Benz.
It remained a smaller player in the UK market until the last decade or so, when value-for-money offerings such as the Tivoli and Rexton came to market offering the brand’s trademark durability in a more refined road-going package.
Since then KGM Motors has built a loyal following, with the line-up ranging from small to large SUVs and even featuring a rugged pick-up. All are spacious, extremely well-equipped, offer impressive off-road and towing capability and maintain an affordable price.
KGM Motors & EVs
KGM Motors was later to market than some brands with electric vehicles, but it waited until the technology delivered the affordability and performance that its customers expect.
It first brought the affordable and practical Korando e-Motion to market in 2022, before following that up with the rugged and stylish Torres in 2024.
Top models
The KGM Korando E-Motion is the brand’s rational leasing offering, with an affordable price combined with lots of space for both passengers and luggage. It also features lots of equipment including heated and cooled leather seats, along with strong performance and a range of up to 211 miles.
The follow-up to the Korando is the KGM Torres. This is a larger and style-oriented car with a rugged look, strong off-road capability, and even more space inside. The boot is huge, while again standard equipment levels are high for the money. With a range of up to 287 miles on a charge it’s also a capable long-distance EV to lease.
