The scorpion badge tells you all you need to know about Abarth. While Fiat focuses on stylish, compact city cars, its performance sub-brand Abarth gives them an extra sprinkling of spice. And now the scorpion is going electric.
Key highlights
The Abarth brand dates back to the 1940s with its roots in sports cars before it was acquired in the 1970s by Fiat, becoming the racing arm of the Italian manufacturer. It was in the 2000s that it resurfaced as a standalone sub-brand creating performance versions of Fiat’s popular cars such as the Grande Punto, 124 Spider and, of course, the iconic 500.
Abarth & EVs
As the Abarth product line-up directly follows Fiat, we’ve had to wait a while for the first electric Abarth with Fiat only introducing the Fiat 500e back in 2020. Electric power is well suited to Abarth, though, with the sporty brand able to take advantage of the instant acceleration to make a car that has all the fun and performance you’d expect from the scorpion.
Top models
The Abarth 500e was officially launched in 2023 and is a hot hatch at its core, taking the retro city car and making it race ready. There’s the standard model and a 500e Turismo for those wanting the fastest option. What makes the Abarth stand out from other EV performance cars is the original sound generator that mimics the sound of an engine to give you an extra thrill on the open road.
Similar brands
Abarth doesn’t necessarily have any direct rivals in terms of brands but there will soon be performance versions of rivals to the 500 that you should consider, for example the MG4 XPower and MINI Cooper E.
