About Ferrari cars

Ferrari is quite possibly the greatest single name in motoring — a brand that everyone instantly recognises and understands. It’s all about beautiful, glamorous, fast cars, combined with its legendary motor sports successes. Founded as a car maker in its own right (it had been a racing team originally) by Enzo Ferrari in 1947, it has gone on to dominate Formula One and sports car racing ever since, and has produced some of the fastest, most beautiful, and most desirable cars ever.

Ferrari has traditionally manufactured only sports cars, leaving the practical family-shaped stuff to others. That has started to change a little in recent years though. While the company still focuses on sports-and-supercars such as the Roma, the 296 GTB, and the new 12Cilindri, it’s also finally branched out — sort of — into SUVs, with the taller, four-door, and four-seat Purosangue.

Ferrari does have a tricky future ahead of it, though, as it transitions to making electric cars. Ferrari has been making ultra-high performance plug-in hybrids for years, but moving to an all-battery car will be harder for this brand — soaked in its V12 and V8 petrol engine history — than probably any other.

Even with that uncertain future, and even with a few duff cars in its back catalogue, there’s no doubt that Ferrari remains the most charismatic car brand of them all, and one of the most desirable car makers in the world.

What our car expert says

“The suspension of the Ferrari 296 GTB is so good at dealing with bumps that it feels like witchcraft. It’s the best car Ferrari makes right now.”

Ferrari at a glance

  • There are currently 16 Ferrari retail locations in the UK, plus three service-only centres

  • Don’t bother asking about finance deals — if you have to ask, you can’t afford one

  • With some limited-run Ferrari models, you actually have to be invited to buy one by the company

  • There are six models in the current Ferrari lineup — Roma, 296, SF90, 12Cilindri, and Purosangue — plus convertible versions of all but the Purosangue

  • Ferrari offers a standard three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty but that can optionally (and at a cost) be extended out to a full 15 years

Ferrari FAQs

Ferrari was founded by Enzo Ferrari, who tried his hand as a racing driver in the 1920s before becoming the team manager for Alfa Romeo’s racing department in the 1930s. After WWII, he set up on his own in the Italian town of Maranello, near Bologna, and the rest is history… His Formula One team has won 16 constructor’s championships and 15 driver’s titles, and has won 246 races. At Le Mans, Ferrari has won the famous 24hr race 11 times, including two on the trot in 2023 and 2024. Enzo passed away in 1988, just days before his team won the Italian Grand Prix, the only win for Ferrari that year.

Ferrari is pretty rare these days, in that it’s not owned by a wider automotive group. It is approximately 67.09% owned by public shareholders, 22.91% owned by Dutch holding company Exor, and the remaining 10% is owned by Enzo Ferrari’s son Piero.

Yes, Ferrari is Italian. Its headquarters and factory are in Maranello, in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy

Ferraris are made at the company’s headquarters in Maranello, Italy.

Ferraris are so expensive for two reasons. One, there is an incredible level of engineering and innovation needed to make an 830hp supercar such as the 296 GTB that can also run on pure-electric power for short bursts, and which is as easy to drive to the shops as a Fiat Panda. Secondly, Ferrari’s image — surely the single most desirable car brand in the world — and its limited production runs allows it to charge pretty much whatever it likes for its cars. It’s not a company that has to conform to normal sales and marketing practices.

Modern Ferraris start at around £175,000 for the Roma, while the 296 GTB is about £250,000 and the Purosangue SUV costs more than £315,000.

Alternatives to Ferrari cars

We don’t currently sell Ferraris on carwow, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get your luxury performance car fix. McLaren makes excellent sports cars, too, while you have Aston Martin and Bentley building luxury performance SUVs. Then there’s Porsche, of course, which makes brilliantly comfortable and capable options that are generally much more affordable than their Italian alternatives. Keep an eye on carwow for the latest new car deals and second hand cars.
