The key highlights of the BMW i5
How do you make the BMW 5 Series better? By taking out the engines and fitting electric power, that’s how. The i5 is the first pure-EV version of the 5 Series ever made.
With a distinctive design and premium, high-tech interior, the i5 will soothe your passengers while delivering on the brand’s ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ tagline. With efficient rear-wheel drive and powerful four-wheel drive versions available, there’s a version to lease for every budget and need.
BMW will even offer an i5 Touring estate version in due course, making an already spacious family car even more practical. Key highlights include technology features borrowed from the bigger i7, including a large curved infotainment display panel and BMW’s very latest operating system bringing entertainment and gaming functions.
BMW i5 performance and range
The BMW i5 is initially available in two versions: the rear-wheel drive eDrive40 and the four-wheel drive M60 xDrive. Expect more to arrive in time.
The BMW i5 eDrive40 develops 335bhp, for a 0-62mph time of six seconds dead. Upgrading to the M60 xDrive adds a second electric motor to produce 593bhp in total, enough for a 0-62mph time of just 3.8 seconds.
Both versions of the BMW i5 come with the same 84kWh battery pack. This gives an official WLTP range of up to 357 miles (depending on spec) in the eDrive40 model, and 316 miles in the M60 model. A real-world estimate for both is 304 miles and 268 miles respectively.
Both models can rapid charge at speeds of up to 205kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in around 30 minutes.
