Forget the energy price cap 鈥 charge up for less than 拢10 a month by doing this

Car changing is a big deal
Charging an electric car at home just got cheaper, thanks to a drop in the energy price cap starting today. But switching to a smart energy tariff could save you even more.
Good news for EV owners: you can expect to see lower home charging costs thanks to the energy price cap coming down. And if you鈥檙e using a smart charger and off-peak tariffs, you could save even more.
From today to 30 September, if you鈥檙e on a standard variable tariff (default tariff) and pay for your electricity by Direct Debit, you will pay on average 25.73p/kWh instead of 27.03p/kWh, meaning charging at home is now more affordable. But if you switch to a smart energy tariff, you could slash your charging bills by more than two-thirds.
Want to make the switch to electric? Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on 莲花直播. And you can also sell your car to make way for an electric car, too. We鈥檙e here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.
Tariffs such as Intelligent Octopus Go, which offer rates as low as 7p/kWh during off-peak hours, could allow EV drivers to charge their cars for less than 拢10 a month, according to EV charging company Ohme.
鈥淐harging at home is already the most cost-effective way to power your electric car,鈥 said Ohme CEO David Watson. 鈥淭his latest price drop is great news, but drivers can save even more by switching to an EV-friendly energy tariff.鈥
To put these savings into perspective, fully charging a Volkswagen ID5 with a 77kWh battery could cost just 拢5.39 on an off-peak smart tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go for the VW鈥檚 342-mile claimed range, compared to 拢19.82 using the standard electricity rate.
Over the course of the year, a typical EV driver covering around 7,000 miles a year could spend around 拢119 on charging with a smart tariff compared to 拢437 on the new SVT. The same mileage in an average petrol car would cost more than 拢1,000.
Under the price cap, Ofgem reviews and sets the maximum an energy supplier can charge per unit of energy and for the daily standing charge. For EV owners, the daily standing charge for electricity will fall from 53.80p to 51.37p.
As energy prices ease until September, now is the perfect time for you to reassess your home charging set-up, and potentially cut hundreds of pounds from their annual motoring bills.
