New trim levels add extra equipment at a knockdown price
In the face of new competition form the likes of the soon-on-sale Renault Megane and excellent new Vauxhall Astra, VW has announced two new models for the venerable Golf range.
The first is called the Golf GT Edition and is a direct replacement for the old Golf GT trim level. The new model adds聽18-inch alloy wheels, replacing the GT trim鈥檚 17-inch versions, and a panoramic sunroof that fills the car鈥檚 interior with natural light. The additional equipment should cost 拢1,795, but is yours for a 拢300 increase compared to the old GT.
Despite looking sporty, GT Edition聽trim can be had with VW鈥檚 excellent 1.6-litre diesel engine that鈥檚 capable of returning fuel economy of nearly 75mpg and costs just 拢20 a year to tax.
Golf R-Line Edition
Further up the range, the new Golf R-Line Edition offers聽much the same, replacing the old R-Line model and adding the same extra聽equipment as the GT Edition for an additional cost of 拢300, so you get a sporty body kit but with 18-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof.
Volkswagen offers it with its excellent 2.0-litre diesel engine which mixes power and frugality in equal measure.
