Find out why this smartly styled electric hatchback is ideal for those in search of battery-powered family wheels.

If you want a practical, modern, electric family hatchback with the backing of a big name, then this car is well worth considering. The Volkswagen ID.3 is, essentially, VW’s electric answer to the Golf hatchback, and at a mere £185 a month, it should be on any prospective EV buyer’s shortlist.

Lease a Volkswagen ID.3 from £185 a month

You can lease a VW ID3 from £184.54 a month (initial payment: £2,670.28) on a 24-month, 5,000-miles-per-year deal. That pays for the mid-range Pure Match model with the 52kWh battery pack and 240-mile range, as well as a 170hp electric motor driving the rear wheels. Included as standard are 18-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera and two-zone climate control, not to mention wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and heated front seats.

Why should you consider the Volkswagen ID3?

Volkswagen builds the benchmark for petrol- and diesel-powered hatchbacks, so it’s no surprise to see the German brand building a benchmark electric hatchback. The design is stylish and modern, with a more rounded shape than that of the Golf, making it practical and aerodynamic. Inside, meanwhile, the ID.3 is minimalist and high-tech, with a big touchscreen that’s occasionally tricky to navigate, but it’s sharp and responds quickly to inputs.

The ID3 also offers a wide range of different battery and motor options, ranging from basic ‘Pure’ models with the 52kWh battery and 170hp electric motor, providing around 240 miles of official range. Opting for the Pro models, however, gives you a 59kWh battery, 204hp and just under 270 miles of range, while the Pro S versions offer 79kWh of battery capacity and around 350 miles between charges. Finally, the GTX models get 326hp and eke about 370 miles from their 79kWh batteries.

On the road, the ID3 is generally stable and comfortable on a long drive, while the larger battery options provide plenty of range. Versions with big alloy wheels feel a bit less composed around town, where potholes will send a jolt through the car, but less upmarket versions feel much more supple.

Volkswagen ID3 alternatives

Still not convinced? Here are some other options for you to consider:

  • MG4 EV: Sharp to look at and good to drive, but some cheap plastics let the side down slightly.
  • Cupra Born: Arguably better looking than the ID.3 and cooler inside, but bronze trim won’t suit everyone.
  • Peugeot E-308: The cool Peugeot is stylish inside and out, but the battery isn’t that big.
