Car changing is a big deal
Renault and Dacia have confirmed a cyber attack through a third-party that exposed UK customers鈥 personal and vehicle data, but say the incident has since been contained and resolved.
Renault and its sister brand Dacia have warned UK customers that personal details including names, addresses, phone numbers, emails and vehicle registrations have been stolen in a cyber attack.
The breach occurred through one of the brands鈥 third-party providers, not Renault or Dacia鈥檚 own systems.
In an email to affected customers, Renault said: 鈥淲e are very sorry to inform you about a cyber attack on one of our third-party providers, leading to some Renault UK customers鈥 personal data being taken from one of their systems.鈥
Both Renault and Dacia stressed that no financial data or passwords were accessed. The incident has been 鈥渃ontained and removed,鈥 with the company emphasising that its own systems were not infiltrated.
鈥淲e are in the process of contacting all affected customers, advising them of the cyber attack and reminding them to be cautious of any unsolicited requests for personal information,鈥 the statement said.
If you鈥檙e concerned about the breach, you can visit for more info or contact Renault鈥檚 Data Protection Officer at dataprivacy@renault.co.uk鈥.
A Renault UK spokesperson added: 鈥淲e wish to apologise to all affected customers. Data privacy is of utmost importance to us and we deeply regret that this has occurred.鈥
Cyber attacks targeting carmakers are becoming increasingly common. Just last month, Jaguar Land Rover faced a major cyber incident that has halted production for weeks.
And as for Renault and Dacia customers, the best defence now is extra vigilance.
What customers should do now
- Be cautious of unexpected emails or calls. Renault says it will never ask for your password. Treat any message that does as suspicious.
- Check the sender carefully as fraudsters often create lookalike addresses that appear genuine at first glance.
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) where possible, especially on accounts linked to your email.
- If you receive a scam call or message, report it to Action Fraud (UK) or your local authority.
