Car changing is a big deal
Planning a road trip this summer? Brace yourself for pricier pit stops at the pump.
If you鈥檙e packing the car and heading off on a summer getaway, you鈥檙e not alone. And sadly, the rising cost of fuel could make it that bit more expensive.
July saw petrol and diesel prices rise for the second month in a row, according to new figures from the RAC. It鈥檚 not dramatic 鈥 petrol鈥檚 up just under a penny, diesel by almost 2p 鈥 but after June鈥檚 increases too, it all adds up.
Since the start of summer, petrol has climbed nearly 3p a litre, and diesel 4.5p. That means filling up a 55-litre family car will now cost you 拢74.26 for petrol or 拢78.57 for diesel, which is noticeably more than just a couple of months ago.
It鈥檚 a frustrating hit just as many families are trying to stretch their family budgets.
鈥淯nfortunately, drivers heading into the busy summer holiday season will be met with rising prices at the pumps,鈥 said RAC fuel spokesperson Simon Williams. 鈥淩etailers are keeping their margins high, especially on petrol, and that鈥檚 making life harder for drivers.鈥

There is cheaper fuel out there 鈥 if you know where to look
If you鈥檙e travelling through Northern Ireland, you鈥檙e in luck as fuel there is the cheapest in the UK. Petrol averages just 128p per litre and diesel 134.5p. Want to go even cheaper? Costco members can fill up for around 125.6p for petrol and 133.2p for diesel 鈥 though that only helps if there鈥檚 one near your route.
Supermarkets are also consistently better value than other forecourts, with average prices around 4p lower than the national average.
But in some parts of England, prices can differ by as much as 34p per litre depending on the forecourt. That鈥檚 the difference between a 拢69 tank and an 拢88 one, just for choosing the wrong place to fill up.

How to avoid overpaying
Don鈥檛 wait until the tank鈥檚 almost empty: give yourself time to compare prices. Free apps such as myRAC can help you find the cheapest fuel nearby, especially if you鈥檙e on unfamiliar roads.
In fact, 莲花直播 has its own online fuel price checker tool that allows you to compare the prices of petrol and diesel at nearby petrol stations.
It might not save the holiday, but it鈥檒l definitely take the sting out of filling up.
Top tips to save fuel on your summer holiday road trip
Whether you鈥檙e off to the coast, the countryside, or just tackling the school holiday chaos, fuel costs can add up fast. But with these few simple tricks, you can make your tank go further and save money for the fun stuff.
1. Pack light
Every extra kilo in your boot makes your engine work harder. If you don鈥檛 need it, leave it behind. Even roof boxes and bike racks add drag, so only bring them if they鈥檙e absolutely necessary.
2. Check your tyres
Under-inflated tyres create more rolling resistance, which means your car uses more fuel. Before you set off, check your tyre pressure (including the spare) and top them up to the recommended level, especially if your car鈥檚 loaded up with passengers and luggage.
3. Drive smoothly
Sharp acceleration and heavy braking guzzles fuel. Try to anticipate the road ahead and maintain a steady speed. On motorways, stick to the speed limit of 70mph as it鈥檚 much more efficient than pushing 70mph+.
4. Use cruise control wisely
Cruise control is great on flat roads, but on hilly routes it can actually use more fuel. Use it on long, level stretches and switch it off when you need more control.
5. Ditch the air con (when you can)
Air conditioning can increase fuel consumption, especially at lower speeds. On cooler days, open a window instead, though at high speeds (like on the motorway), open windows can create drag too, so a brief blast of A/C may be more efficient.
6. Plan your route
Avoid traffic jams, roadworks, or long detours by checking your route in advance. Apps such as Google Maps or Waze can help you spot delays and find faster, fuel-saving alternatives.
7. Fill up in cheaper areas
Fuel prices vary massively depending on where you are. Try to avoid motorway services, where fuel is often 10-15p per litre more expensive. Fill up at supermarkets or in town centres where prices are more competitive.
8. Share the drive (and the cost)
If you鈥檙e travelling with other friends or family, consider carpooling as fewer cars means less fuel overall.
