Glastonbury bound? Plan your journey now

Car changing is a big deal
Glastonbury Festival kicks off tomorrow 鈥 don鈥檛 get caught in the traffic chaos.
If you鈥檙e heading to the South West this week, or just passing through, be prepared: National Highways is warning of busy roads and potential delays as thousands flock to Glastonbury Festival.
With around 200,000 people expected to attend the iconic music event at Worthy Farm, traffic is forecast to build from Wednesday 25 June, and stay heavy through to Friday 27 June, as festival-goers make their way to the site near Pilton, Somerset.
Although the festival takes place about five miles from Glastonbury town itself, the main routes 鈥 especially the M5 (junctions 25 and 23), A303, and A39 鈥 are likely to be affected.
In previous years, the A39 has been heavily congested by mid-morning on arrival days. Traffic is also expected to spike again on Monday 30 June, as attendees head home.

Expect busiest spots on major routes
The main motorway route for festival traffic is the M5, with drivers advised to exit at junction 23, then continue on the A39 and A361 to reach the site. For those coming from London, the A303 to A37 route will also be busy 鈥 especially eastbound near Podimore Roundabout.
Kathryn Wiltshire, resilience planner for National Highways in the South West, said: 鈥淲e鈥檙e reminding road users to plan ahead for Glastonbury 鈥 around 200,000 people are expected to attend this year鈥檚 festival and roads leading to the event are likely to be very busy.鈥
Stay safe and beat the heat
With warm weather expected throughout the week, drivers are also being urged to check their vehicles before setting off 鈥 especially tyre pressure, fuel, oil, and coolant levels. Don鈥檛 forget to bring plenty of water for passengers, and factor in rest breaks at least every two hours.
To help with safe and stress-free travel, National Highways is encouraging all motorists to remember their TRIP checklist:
- Top-up: Fuel, oil, and screen wash
- Rest: Take breaks every two hours
- Inspect: Tyres and tread depth
- Prepare: Be ready for all weather conditions
鈥淏reaking down on the way to or from your destination is the last thing anyone wants, especially in the heat,鈥 Wiltshire added. 鈥淎 few quick checks before you leave can make all the difference.鈥
