Is a used Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport a good car?

The Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport is an executive car for those who don鈥檛 want (or don鈥檛 have the budget) for something from the likes of BMW, Audi and Mercedes. It鈥檚 very similar to the Insignia that came before it, but is meant to be a bit posher than the old car.

As such it gets a swoopy roofline that鈥檚 almost coupe-like, and it鈥檚 wider and lower than the old car to make it look a bit more sporty and imposing. There is a downside to this, which is the fact that the roofline eats into rear seat headroom quite a bit.

A Skoda Superb will be more spacious inside, and have a bigger boot, too. At 490 litres, the Vauxhall is fairly spacious, but you get more room in the Skoda and a Ford Mondeo. If you鈥檙e set on the Vauxhall but boot space is a sticking point, there is an Insignia Sports Tourer estate version.

Whichever body shape you go for, the Insignia is comfortable for long distances, though this is at the expense of fun on a twisty road. This is reflected in the fact that the used market is full of diesels, which appeal to people who do a lot of motorway miles.

What to look for when buying a second hand Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport

Vauxhall doesn鈥檛 have a fantastic reputation for reliability, and the older Insignia regularly scored poorly in owner satisfaction surveys. However, with newer models sharing parts with other Vauxhall models, repairs and maintenance aren鈥檛 too expensive.

Many of these models will have spent a life on the motorway, so could have racked up a lot of miles. If this is the case, the engine shouldn鈥檛 have been too highly stressed, so it鈥檚 nothing to worry about so long as you see evidence of regular maintenance.

As with any high mileage car, particularly those that have been used as company cars, be sure to look around the interior for any obvious signs of wear and tear. The driver鈥檚 seat is a common place for damage to appear.
