All 46,000 Tesla Cybertruck have been recalled because one of the body panels could fly off at speed.

When the Tesla Cybertruck was first unveiled way back in 2019, it was touted as being a super-tough truck which would be bulletproof thanks to its hardened stainless steel body. Well it may be able to deflect a bullet, but some trucks can鈥檛 deflect the wind because there is a panel which could fall off at speed.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), North America鈥檚 body for road safety, has issued a recall for all 46,000 Tesla Cybertrucks because 鈥淭he cant rail, a stainless-steel exterior trim panel, can delaminate and detach from the vehicle.鈥

New Tesla Cybertruck cant rail

The cant rail is the stainless steel strip which runs parallel to the windscreen and over the top of the truck. It鈥檚 certainly not something you鈥檇 want hitting your car on the highway.

So why is this happening? Well it turns out that the cant rail is glued in place, and this adhesive can fail 鈥 resulting in the whole panel peeling off. There are a few videos floating around on X of these panels coming off, and YouTuber Whistlin鈥 Diesel also found this to be an issue during one of his famous durability tests.

He found that all it took was to pry up on one corner of the panel before it could be pulled off by hand with seemingly minimal effort. Now this was of course a deliberate attempt to damage the truck, but now it鈥檚 happening under normal driving conditions.

This isn鈥檛 the first issue the Cybertruck has faced either. Last year a large number of trucks were recalled for an issue with the accelerator pedal, which could result in the metal cover plate sliding up and causing it to get stuck in the fully down position. This was remedied with a rivet to keep the pedal cover in place.

As for this latest recall, customers are being told to take their Cybertrucks to a Tesla service centre to have the cant rail assembly replaced with one that 鈥渕eets durability testing requirements鈥.

This is done free of charge to the customer, and Tesla says the fix should take around one hour. It also says that you can continue driving your truck in the meantime, but we鈥檇 suggest keeping an eye on these panels and taking caution if it looks like they鈥檙e coming loose.
