Looking for an EV car but don’t fancy a Tesla Model 3? Here’s every alternative to Elon Musk’s electric saloon ranked from best to worst.

The Tesla Model 3 is one of the best electric cars on sale today. It’s great to drive, offers over 400 miles of range and comes packed with tech as standard. It starts from £40,000 as well, making it cheaper than some small hatchbacks.

You can also get a blistering Performance version which can go toe-to-toe with the BMW M3, but what if the Model 3 just doesn’t tickle your fancy? Maybe the styling is just too anonymous, or perhaps you don’t like the button-free interior layout?

Well, the Tesla Model 3 has plenty of competition in the EV market, and there are loads of alternatives to consider. We’ve picked 7 of its closest rivals and ranked them from best to worst.

  1. Kia EV6
  2. Tesla Model Y
  3. BYD Seal
  4. Polestar 2
  5. BMW i4
  6. Volkswagen ID7
  7. Hyundai Ioniq 6

1. Kia EV6 – the best alternative

It may not look like it, but the Kia EV6 is actually a very close alternative to the Tesla Model 3. Both cars start from around £40,000 and offer broadly similar performance and practicality. The Model 3’s boot may be bigger, but the EV6 is better to drive and has a more user-friendly interior layout.

2. Tesla Model Y – A spacious Tesla SUV for similar money

Chances are if you’re looking at a Tesla Model 3 you’ve also considered the Model Y. When you see the two parked next to each other in a showroom the SUV looks very tempting with its cavernous interior for not much more cash. The range isn’t as impressive, but it’s just as good to drive and has the same excellent infotainment system.

3. BYD Seal – A Chinese EV which is great to drive

The BYD Seal is a great electric saloon if you’re after something a bit left-field. You can get a properly quick version, it’s comfortable over long distances and you get loads of cutting-edge tech as standard. It’s not as spacious inside as the Tesla, but the interior has a more interesting design.

4. Polestar 2 – Super stylish, inside and out

For something a bit more stylish you could consider the Polestar 2. This Scandinavian EV has a much nicer-looking interior than the Tesla, and the material quality is better as well. You get an excellent infotainment system with Google software, but a Model 3 is cheaper and more comfortable.

5. BMW i4 – Fun to drive on a country road

The Tesla Model 3 is pretty good fun to drive, but if you’re looking for the best electric B-road blaster then you’ll want the BMW i4. It hides its weight very well through the corners, and it has a really solid, high-quality interior, but it starts from £10,000 more than the Tesla Model 3 and it’s a bit cramped in the rear seats.

6. Volkswagen ID7 – The best for interior space

If interior space is your top priority, the Volkswagen ID7 is the car for you. We’ve actually lived with one for a few months, and everyone who’s been inside has commented on how palatial the rear seats are. It has a massive boot as well, and it’s a super-comfy cruiser. It’s just not all that exciting to drive, and the immense length makes it tricky to thread through tight spaces.

7. Hyundai Ioniq 6 – A futuristic-looking EV which is good to drive

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 certainly turns heads when you drive down the road with its streamlined shape – it looks like something out of a sci-fi film. It’s also comfy over bumps and comes loaded with tech as standard, but the rear headroom is limited and the boot is dwarfed by the Tesla’s.
