Commercial 4×4 variant of rugged off-roader costs from £53k and is ready to deliver Amazon parcels halfway up Everest

Toyota has announced a new version of the Land Cruiser – the Land Cruiser Commercial. This all-terrain bruiser takes the standard Land Cruiser but swaps out all five of its rear seats for a sturdy, rubber-lined load area and a mesh bulkhead, turning it into the mud-plugging load-lugger we never knew we wanted.

Commercial 4x4s are a small but interesting niche in the world of vans – they provide a bit more refinement and a more secure load area than a pickup truck, but without the workmanlike image of a panel van. Plus, they’re ideal if you have to do some serious off-roading.

The new Land Cruiser Commercial joins the Land Rover Defender hard top and Discovery Commercial, the KGM Rexton Commercial and the Suzuki Jimny Commercial – distinguished company all – but it’s the Defender that’ll be the main alternative, as both vehicles share a retro-inspired design, incredible off-road ability and a dedicated fanbase.

The Land Cruiser starts out very strong with its styling. It looks just like the standard model, and it’s only if you study it closely you’ll notice the opaque rear windows or full-height mesh bulkhead behind the front seats.

In place of the five rear seats you get in the standard version, there’s an edge-to-edge floor tray. The load area measures 1,685mm long by 1,090mm high and 1,286mm wide, and overall cargo capacity is measured at 2,000 litres – only a little larger than the passenger car model with all of its seats folded, but with a much more hardwearing surface to load items onto.

And as the functionality of the rear doors has been retained, you can load the Land Cruiser from the rear or from either side. Towing capacity of 3.5t has been carried over from the passenger model.

In the cab, it’s much more high-tech than the previous Land Cruiser Commercial – there are no velour seats or manual gearbox for a start. Instead, you get many of the functions standard to the passenger version of the Land Cruiser, including the Toyota Safety Sense package of driver assistance functions.

You also get heated front seats and steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and wireless smartphone connectivity – though the 9.0-inch touchscreen is a lot smaller than the 12.0-inch one you get in the standard Land Cruiser.

Under the bonnet is the same 2.8-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, and you still get loads of tech to make off-road driving easier such as Crawl Control, Hill-start Assist and Downhill Assist.

The price for all this capability is just a little under £52,000, ex.VAT – a tiny bit cheaper than a Defender Hard Top. However, put it next to the sub-£40,000 Hilux – which uses the same engine – and it starts to look a bit pricey. Worth it? For off-road enthusiasts who want a cheaper version of the Land Cruiser, or heavy-duty users who need a commercial 4×4 for work purposes and don’t fancy a pickup, undoubtedly. It’ll be on sale from August 2025.
