Mat Watson: this car is one of the last V8-powered AMG saloons, and it’s a bit of a used bargain

Car changing is a big deal
I recently reviewed the new Mercedes-AMG E53, and while it’s fast and posh it left me feeling a bit cold. For less cash you could buy this V8-powered beast of an AMG.
The old Mercedes-AMG E63 S is a bit of a second-hand bargain these days. For less than £50,000 you can buy one of the last V8-powered AMG saloon cars ever made, and I’d have this over the new E53 for a few reasons.
But before we get into that, we need to talk about money.
Used Mercedes-AMG E63 S deals
I had a quick look at used deals on Á«»¨Ö±²¥ and found a 2020 Mercedes-AMG E63 S with 55,000 miles on the clock for £47,500, rising to £71,000 for a late 2022 car with 26,000 miles on it.
Not only is that almost £25,000 less than when it was new, it’s also almost half the price of a new Mercedes-AMG E53 – that car starts from £92,000 but you’ll have to spend close to £100,000 if you want the Driver Performance pack which unlocks the full 612hp.
Why I love the Mercedes-AMG E63 S
For starters, the Mercedes-AMG E63 S comes with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine which makes a fantastic noise, unlike the rather lacklustre straight-six in the new E53. It’s also got 612hp on tap, the same as an E53 with the Driver Performance Pack.
With no hybrid gubbins on board, the E63 S is a lot lighter than the new E53 – tipping the scales at around 1,900kg as opposed to 2,300kg. This means it just feels more nimble and fun on a twisty back road.
I get that Mercedes has had to go down the hybrid route with the new E53 for emissions reasons, and it does have its plus points. You get a really useful electric-only range of around 60 miles, and it’s much more high-tech inside than the old E63.
But if you like blasting down a country road to a thunderous V8 soundtrack, a used Mercedes-AMG E63 S could be the ideal choice for you.
