The all-new MG HS is here, and it looks as though it鈥檒l provide buyers with a great-value alternative to cars such as the Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan.
Prices for this SUV start from 拢24,995, or you can pay 拢31,495 for a plug-in hybrid version with an impressive 75 miles of all-electric range.
New MG HS price and specs
Let鈥檚 talk about money. This new MG HS starts from 拢24,995 for the basic petrol version, making it just 拢965 more expensive than the car it replaces. It鈥檚 also almost 拢4,000 cheaper than a Kia Sportage, and it鈥檚 a whopping 拢10,000 less than a Peugeot 3008 or Volkswagen Tiguan. In fact, it costs about the same as a well-specced Volkswagen Polo.
So what do you get for this relatively small outlay? All cars come with MG Pilot 鈥 a suite of driver assistance features including lane keeping assist, lane departure warning and rear cross traffic alert. LED headlights, a reversing camera and dual 12.3-inch screens also come as standard. If you go for the automatic gearbox you get adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist as well.
The new MG HS is available to order now, with deliveries of the petrol version expected to start by the end of this month. A plug-in hybrid model will also hit the showrooms in September.
New MG HS interior and infotainment
The interior of the outgoing MG HS was starting to show its age, but this new one is much more modern-looking. This is thanks in part to the twin 12.3-inch screens perched atop the dashboard.
The central touchscreen features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as live traffic alerts, weather updates and access to music streaming services. Range-topping Trophy versions also have a 360-degree camera system.
MG also says that the materials have been improved for the new HS. This was a sticking point for the old car, which looked posh on the surface but the quality was very much only skin deep. We鈥檒l have to get hands-on with the new car to find out if the upgrades have worked.
New MG HS engines
You have two engine options in the new MG HS, the basic version getting a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a manual gearbox. This engine can also be paired to a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The more headline-grabbing choice though is the new plug-in hybrid model. It pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine to an electric motor and a 24.7kWh battery. The old HS plug-in hybrid could do up to 32 miles on electric power alone, however the new model more than doubles this with 75 miles of range. That鈥檚 also 13 miles more than the new Skoda Kodiaq PHEV can do. In fact, it鈥檚 only beaten by the 拢53,000 Mercedes GLC.
New MG HS design
The new MG HS is not only better-equipped than before, it鈥檚 also more striking to look at. Okay, so it won鈥檛 win any beauty contests 鈥 especially compared to the Peugeot 3008 鈥 but it looks modern enough at this price point.
Up front you have swept-back LED headlights and a large, imposing grille which is similar in shape to the one found on the new MG3 hatchback. If you go for the Trophy model you also get some snazzy diamond-cut alloy wheels.
This new car is larger in every dimension than the outgoing model, and the sloping roofline makes it look a bit more sporty. There鈥檚 a full-width light bar at the rear as well, which may put you in mind of the Lotus Eletre.
