New Jaecoo 5 and E5 alternatives: bargain Chinese SUV has some strong competition

August 20, 2025 by

These are the new and Jaecoo E5, a pair of SUVs that form the second model launch for fledgling Chinese car brand Jaecoo. In styling terms, the 5 looks like a Jaecoo 7 that’s been washed on too hot a setting, while the E5 looks like it’s had some of its features photoshopped out.

They’re compact SUVs with even more compact price tags – the petrol-powered 5 costs from £24,505, while the EV isn’t much more expensive at £27,505, and that’s before our network of dealers have had a chance to offer some serious Á«»¨Ö±²¥ discounts on them. Those numbers put the two cars into contention with several really talented alternatives.

We’ve not driven the new Jaecoo 5 just yet, but we know all the trim and spec details. So which cars does the Jaecoo really need to beat in order to succeed? We’ve rounded up a few of them below.

Remember, you can buy a brand new or used car right here on Á«»¨Ö±²¥. And you can sell your car, too. We’re here to help you through every step of your car-changing journey.

Ford Puma/Ford Puma Gen-E

The Jaecoo 5 lineup almost seems perfectly targeted towards the Ford Puma. That makes sense – the Puma is the best-selling small SUV in the UK, and its newly introduced Gen-E electric variant offers strong value. Both versions are a couple of thousand pounds pricier than the equivalent Jaecoo, coming in at £26,580 and £28,495 respectively – though with Á«»¨Ö±²¥ savings, there’s almost nothing in it.

The Puma has a fantastically practical interior for a small SUV with a huge boot incorporating an absolutely vast underfloor storage area. It’s also great to drive – an area where Chinese SUVs, such as the larger Jaecoo 7, often fall flat.

The Jaecoo 5 gets more standard equipment than the basic Ford Puma, though, and the E5 has a 248-mile range vs the Puma Gen-E’s 233 miles. It’ll be really interesting to test these cars back-to-back.

Toyota Yaris Cross

The Yaris Cross is one of the best small SUVs you can buy – it’s so good we gave it the Urban Living prize in the 2025 Á«»¨Ö±²¥ Car of the Year awards. Its hybrid engine splits the difference between the Jaecoo 5 and E5 – it returns incredible fuel economy but isn’t quite as cheap to run, or as eco-friendly as a full EV.

It doesn’t look quite as snazzy as the Jaecoo, and you don’t get as much standard kit, but the stalwart Toyota badge is rather more reassuring to cautious buyers than a brand-new company that’s not been in the UK market for very long.

Jeep Avenger/Avenger Electric

The Avenger is another small SUV available with petrol or electric power, and like the Jaecoo it has faux off-roader looks designed to appeal to people who want a taste of life off-road without the associated compromise. The Avenger starts from £26,050 for the petrol model and £29,989 for the Electric, but Á«»¨Ö±²¥ savings actually make it cheaper than the Jaecoo.

The Avenger is funky to look at and excellent to drive around town. But it’s tight in the rear, and feels a little outclassed on the motorway. Max range of 249 miles on a charge just pips the Jaecoo E5 by a single mile.

Omoda 5/E5

Jaecoo and Omoda have the same parent company, and the Omoda 5 and E5 are pretty much identical under the skin to the Jaecoo 5 and E5. The difference is in the styling, the interiors, and the pricing, because while the petrol-powered Omoda 5 is similar in price to the Jaecoo 5, the Omoda E5 is around £6,000 pricier than the Jaecoo E5.

Generous Á«»¨Ö±²¥ discounts of more than £2,000 on the petrol car and nearly £5,000 on the electric model could preview the sort of savings you’ll get on the Jaecoo when it arrives, though.

We weren’t hugely impressed with the Omoda 5 when we drove it, but Omoda has already given the car a serious update to address feedback – improving interior quality, software, luggage space and drivability.

Dacia Duster

The Duster is our favourite small SUV, and a true value champion with prices starting well below £20,000 with Á«»¨Ö±²¥ discounts. It’s not available as an EV, but there is a very efficient hybrid option – and there’s even one with four-wheel drive if you want a car that can actually tackle a degree of off-roading.

The Duster’s interior feels rugged and easy-to-use, and it feels much better to drive than any car this cheap has a right to.

Kia EV3

The Kia EV3 may come in a few thousand pounds more expensive than the electric Jaecoo E5, but the specs make for really impressive reading. Even the small-battery model can do 270 miles on a charge, but step up to the larger battery and you unlock a 375-mile range.

The EV3 has loads of space inside and a big boot, and the dashboard features two big screens that provide lots of tech in an easy-to-use interface. It’s comfortable to drive and even feels pretty posh inside – no wonder it’s our favourite electric SUV at the moment.
