  • New Audi Active Sphere revealed
  • Last in the line of Sphere concepts
  • Jacked-up coupe off-roader
  • 100kWh battery with up to 372 miles of range
  • 442hp and 720Nm of torque
  • Won鈥檛 actually go on sale

The new Audi Active Sphere concept has been revealed, and it鈥檚 certainly different to the other Sphere concepts you鈥檝e seen so far.

It鈥檚 a jacked-up coupe with a pickup-like rear end, and it鈥檚 packed with plenty of clever technology as well.

New Audi Active Sphere design

The new Audi Active Sphere gives off strong Audi RS7 vibes. It鈥檚 a big four-door coupe with a pronounced bonnet and a curvy sloping roofline.

Unlike the RS7 though, the Active Sphere is jacked-up off-roader. It has a raised ride height, contrasting black cladding around the wheel arches and big side skirts. The glass grille at the font is a unique touch as well, more on that later鈥

The rear end gets a full-width light bar and a huge glass area. The rear window can also fold up over the roof to create a pickup bed with bike holders. How very lifestyle-y.

New Audi Active Sphere motors and batteries

The new Audi Active Sphere has a 100kWh battery, just like the Grand Sphere and Sky Sphere concepts. In the Active Sphere Audi says it can hold enough charge for 鈥渨ell over鈥 372 miles.

This concept also gets dual motors, although Audi claims that 鈥渕ph or lateral acceleration are no longer at the top of the design specifications for this generation of new cars鈥.

This doesn鈥檛 mean it鈥檒l be slow though, the motors produce a combined 442hp and 720Nm of torque, enough to accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds. Not bad for a high-riding off-roader.

New Audi Active Sphere interior and infotainment

The Audi Active Sphere has a very weird interior. For starters, it has a lot of windows. You get two windscreens as well as windows in the bottom of the doors and a glass grille.

This allows you to see through the front of the car when you鈥檙e off-roading, unless you have a load of luggage in the front boot, which is supposed to help you navigate around jagged rocks and the like.

You also get four individual seats, a big heated and cooled box which runs through the centre of the car and no dashboard or steering wheel. Or at least it seems that way.

You see the Active Sphere has full self-driving technology, so the dashboard and steering wheel can fold away to give you an open cabin while the car whisks you along. You can fold this out when you want to take back control.

The Active Sphere also has a futuristic virtual reality infotainment system. There are headsets in the roof which use 鈥榓ugmented reality鈥 or 鈥楢R鈥 technology to replace a normal touchscreen.

They connect to the car鈥檚 on-board computer and project graphics directly into your line of sight. Motion trackers in the car monitor your hands and allow you to adjust settings using hand gestures alone, no buttons needed.

Will I be able to buy an Audi Active Sphere?

Sadly not. The Audi Active Sphere is just a concept car, so you can put your wallets away. However, parts of this car will inspire future production models which Audi will reveal very soon.
